DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

Cross-section resistance under combined bending and shear

A simply supported, laterally unrestrained beam is to be designed to carry concentrated live loads as shown in the figure. In this example ISMB 300 in E250 GR A steel is assessed for its suitability for this application.

Cross-section resistance under combined bending and compression

A beam column of height 3.5 m is to be designed for biaxial factored moments Mz = 81.25 KNm and My = 22 KNm. Factored Axial compressive load on the column is 1035 KN. Check the adequacy of ISHB 450 for the factored loads.

Structural Analysis of Hand Operated Jib Crane As per IS 800 - 2007

Jib cranes are a type of overhead lifting device that are often used in a smaller work area for repetitive and unique lifting tasks.

In this project , design calculation of 4T Jib crane is performed as per guidelines of IS 15419, IS-807 and IS-800:2007 to validate the structural design of all members.

As per IS 15419, IS-807 cl.8.4 & IS-800:2007 cl.5.3.3, acceptability of a design is confirmed by satisfying the below mentioned Load Cases and Combinations.

Load Cases

  1. DL = Dead Load (Self Wt. of crane)

  2. LL = Safe Working Load of 4000kg (4T)

  3. Horizontal loads due to slewing motion (HL)

    1. CFORX (centrifugal force)

    2. INFOR (Inertia force)

  4. WX = Wind Load in X-direction

  5. WZ = Wind Load in Z-direction.

  6. ELX = Seismic Load in X-direction

  7. ELZ = Seismic Load in Z-direction.

Load Combinations as per IS 807

As per clause 8.4:

M is the duty factor, ψ is -the impact factor.

  1. M (DL+ ψ LL + (CFORX + ELX + 0.3ELZ)) + WLX (Design Criteria)

  2. M (DL+ ψ LL + (INFOR + 0.3ELX + ELZ)) + WLZ (Design Criteria)

Load Combinations as per IS 800

As per clause 3.5.1 and 5.3.3:

  • Design Criteria

  1. 1.5(DL+LL)

  2. 1.2(DL+LL+WX)

  3. 1.2(DL+LL+WZ)

  4. 1.2(DL+LL+ ELX + 0.3ELZ)

  5. 1.2(DL+LL+ 0.3ELX + ELZ)

  • Serviceability Criteria

  1. 1.0(DL+LL)

  2. DL + 0.8 (LL + WLX)

  3. DL + 0.8 (LL + WLZ)

  4. DL+ 0.8 (LL+ ELX + 0.3ELZ)

  5. DL+ 0.8 (LL+ 0.3ELX + ELZ)
